1 The Chief Executive hosts a National Day reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
6 The Hong Kong Monetary Authority requires DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited to carry out a thorough investigation into the destruction of rented safe deposit boxes at its Mei Foo branch.
8 The Chief Executive announces the appointment of Dr York Chow as the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food. Dr Chow succeeds Dr E K Yeoh, who resigned on July 7.
11 Newly designed banknotes in three denominations - $20, $50 and $1,000 - go into circulation.
12 The Chief Executive hosts a banquet for the French President, Mr Jacques Chirac. The President's visit marks the local opening of the Year of France in China, which includes a presentation of Picasso's stage curtain 'Parade' at the International Finance Centre in Central.

The HKSAR Government and the CPG sign the Supplementary Agreement to CEPA concerning details of the liberalisation measures under CEPA II and related implementation arrangements.
