1	The Chief Executive hosts a National Day reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
6	The Hong Kong Monetary Authority requires DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited to carry out a thorough investigation into the destruction of rented safe deposit boxes at its Mei Foo branch.
8	The Chief Executive announces the appointment of Dr York Chow as the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food. Dr Chow succeeds Dr E K Yeoh, who resigned on July 7.
11	Newly designed banknotes in three denominations - $20, $50 and $1,000 - go into circulation.
12	The Chief Executive hosts a banquet for the French President, Mr Jacques Chirac. The President's visit marks the local opening of the Year of France in China, which includes a presentation of Picasso's stage curtain 'Parade' at the International Finance Centre in Central.
20	The Education and Manpower Bureau issues a consultative document seeking community feedback on the design blueprint, timing of implementation and financial arrangements for reforming the academic structure for senior secondary and higher education.
24	The Tsim Sha Tsui Extension of the Kowloon-Canton Railway is commissioned.
25	The Chief Secretary for Administration starts a nine-day European visit to London, Berlin, Prague and Dublin to promote business and investment opportunities in Hong Kong.
27	The HKSAR Government and the CPG sign the Supplementary Agreement to CEPA concerning details of the liberalisation measures under CEPA II and related implementation arrangements. The Financial Secretary leaves for Tianjin to attend a variety of promotional activities for the '2004 Tianjin-Hong Kong Week'.
