Regeneration
Some of Hong Kong’s older buildings found a new lease of life in 2012. In April, the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Chinese Medicine opened in Lui Seng Chun, a former shophouse in Mong Kok.
The Asia Society Hong Kong Centre near Admiralty, opened in February as a centre for arts, culture and contemporary affairs, blends new structures with former military buildings, some of which were used for storing explosives. The munitions tracks can still be seen.
The restaurant of the Tai O Heritage Hotel, opened in February, now sits atop what was Tai O Police Station on Lantau Island.
Woodside in Tai Tam Country Park, originally built as a residence for senior staff of the Taikoo Sugar Refinery, was opened as the Biodiversity Education Centre in June.
The Yau Ma Tei Theatre, built in 1930, re-opened in July as a Cantonese opera centre.
A statue of Jao Tsung-I, the renowned sinologist, at the Academy bearing his name which opened on the site of the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital in June.
