1a Space

1a Space is a non-profit-making contemporary visual arts organisation and art venue founded and operated by a group of Hong Kong artworkers. Its aim is to promote the critical dissemination of contemporary visual arts practices and affiliated art forms through the 1a Space programme of works drawn from Hong Kong and international arena.

In 2004, 1a Space focused on promoting local Hong Kong visual artists' practice on different media, which cover a wide range of art forms such as painting, sculpture and photography for promoting art appreciation and generating discussion and thoughts on particular media and its development from traditional to contemporary.

Artist Commune

Artist Commune is devoted to the establishment of a new Asian art network with Hong Kong as the centre. In 2004, it organised exhibitions including a China and Hong Kong arts exchange programme, international (German) artist-in-residency programme; and a Hong Kong contemporary ink series.

Asia Art Archive

The Asia Art Archive is the first centre in Hong Kong dedicated to documenting and cataloguing materials relating to contemporary Asian art for public access through its library, online database and website. To further raise awareness and enhance understanding of contemporary local and regional art, it organised a variety of activities including talks, research tours, interviews, symposia and issued publications. It currently has four researchers stationed in Beijing, Tokyo, Taipei and Singapore.

Hong Kong Society for Education in Art

The Hong Kong Society for Education in Art promotes the development of visual arts education in schools and in the community. During the year, the society initiated and organised 'School-Based Arts/Cultural Life, New Teaching Strategy', 'Parent-Child Arts Training Programme' and 'Taiwan Culture and Arts Visit'. It also organised forums and questionnaires about the reform on the academic structure of the new senior secondary and higher education, providing professional views and suggestions.

Para/Site Art Space

Para/Site is a non-profit-making art space run by independent artists in Hong Kong and supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Para/Site aims at promoting contemporary art through activities such as exhibitions, publications, forums and seminars. By initiating education programmes and becoming a generative centre for art criticism, research and exchange, Para/Site has strived to be one of the major stakeholders that shape the contemporary art practices in Hong Kong.

Some highlights of 2004 included the presentation of 'Mapping Identities: The Art and Curating of Oscar Ho' in the ongoing Hong Kong Artists Series, an arts and cultural exchange project in Canada from February to April, and 'Territories' Multi Media Installations for the grand opening and inauguration of the new gallery of Para/Site in August.
