The Immigration Department began a region-wide Identity Card Replacement Exercise in August, introducing for the first time 'smart' card which has the capacity for immigration and non-immigration applications through the innovative use of an embedded computer chip. The exercise will continue for four years, and streamlined procedures are adopted for the public in applying for the card, which is produced in a strict security environment by a specially designed card personalisation machine.
