Hong Kong hosted the East Asian Games in December 2009 – the first major, international multi-sport competition held in the city. It provided a tremendous opportunity to showcase Hong Kong's ability to organize a large-scale, multi-venue event and to encourage greater community participation in sport. For many in Hong Kong, the defining moment of the Games was Hong Kong's nail-biting gold medal victory in football – the joy of which is so clearly captured on the faces of spectators who packed into Hong Kong Stadium for the final.
