Immigration Control
The HKSAR has a very liberal visa policy for visitors. People from more
than 170 countries and territories may come to the HKSAR visa-free for
visits ranging from seven days to six months. Passenger traffic continued
to increase in 1997. A total of 105.5 million passengers travelled to and
from the HKSAR, up 5.8 per cent, from 99.8 million in 1996. Movements
to and from the Mainland rose by 15.1 per cent, from 65 million in 1996
to 75 million. However, the number of visitors travelling to the HKSAR
fell from 11.7 million in 1996 to 10.4 million in 1997, down 11.1 per cent.
These included 2.3 million from the Mainland and 1.8 million from Taiwan.
